This is the direct appeal of the defendant below, appellant, Roland Daniels ("Daniels"), from findings by a jury that he was
guilty but mentally ill with respect to various offenses. Daniels was indicted on July 2, 1985, on charges of Burglary in
the Second Degree, Reckless Endangering in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in excess of $1,500, Assault in the First Degree,
and Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony. Daniels' trial commenced on June 30, 1986, and continued through July 3, 1986. After considerable deliberation, and twice
reporting themselves deadlocked, the jury found Daniels guilty but mentally ill of Burglary in the Second Degree, Criminal
Mischief, and Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony. The jury also found Daniels guilty but mentally
ill of the lesser included offenses of Reckless Endangering in the Second Degree and Assault in the Third Degree. Daniels
was sentenced on September 19, 1986. 1
